Bedlam ruled on Rikers Island Wednesday when an inmate hopped a fence and slipped into the night, sparking a lockdown and massive manhunt.

A prisoner has escaped from New York City's main jail complex, Rikers Island, according to law enforcement sources.

The law enforcement sources added that he jumped over a fence at the C-95 jail, also known as AMKC, which houses about 3,000 inmates. "Everybody was going insane, everybody was in the bus suffocating", said Wendy Jamie, 33, who was visiting an inmate at the Kross center when the lock down began.

The NYPD and Port Authority Police aided correction officers in the seven-hour search that encompassed parts of Queens, as well as the waters surrounding the city's largest jail. Police vehicles, many with their lights flashing, were seen coming to and from the island after nightfall.

The inmate apparently went for outdoor recreation on Wednesday and didn't return. "Rikers Island facilities have been placed on lockdown and we are talking to anyone who may be involved".

Staff observed around 7:30 p.m. that the headcount was off by one, the DOC said. A thorough investigation is underway, which includes an active search for this individual in coordination with NYPD. "They just said that they were on red alert and no one could come in or out". Some of them were stuck on buses, confused about what was happening and why they weren't allowed off.

"We were there since 7:15 on the bus - people passed out".
