76ers, Joel Embiid agree to 5-year, $148M contract extension, report says

The deal represents the Sixers' commitment to Embiid's talent, given that he's been healthy enough to play in only 31 regular-season games since Philadelphia selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 National Basketball Association draft. If Embiid is mostly healthy and plays 65 or more games a season for the next five years, this is a great deal (and the Sixers will become a very risky team). Embiid and the Sixers agreed on a $148 million, five-year extension and it could increase even more if the 7-foot centre reaches certain incentives.

First reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Embiid will make $148 million over the course of the next five years, with the possibility of it becoming a super max deal of $178 million.

Embiid is one of the most-talented young players in the league, but this is a pretty huge bet on a guy who's yet to prove he can stay healthy for even half of a season. Despite averaging just 25.4 minutes per night, Embiid scored 20.2 points and grabbed 7.8 rebounds and shot almost 37 percent from 3-point range.

There will be a fair amount of questions about the timing of the deal, and they're warranted.

As such, the 76ers are taking a massive gamble on Embiid after just 31 career games. According to ESPN, the Sixers have built some protections into Embiid's deal that would offer the team salary cap protections should he suffer an injury and miss a significant period of time.

"I don't know what to say about that", Sixers point guard Ben Simmons of Embiid's contract.

The Sixers and Embiid had until October 16 to agree to an extension; otherwise, Embiid would have become a restricted free agent following the season. While Embiid's injury history is certainly extensive, all of his issues have been unrelated. It's my fourth season, then I can become a free agent. But perhaps Embiid's most notable impact was the difference in performance for the Sixers when he was on and off the court.

"I'm so thrilled to be in this position", Embiid said in a release.

Embiid is the first big name member of the 2014 draft class to be re-signed, with the likes of Andrew Wiggins and Marcus Smart rumoured to be re-signed long-term in the coming days.

Embiid, a native of Cameroon, appreciates that the 76ers were always supportive as he dealt with the injury troubles before finally making it on the court last season.
