Nationals Hire Dave Martinez As New Manager

The Cubs advanced to the NLCS in Martinez's other two seasons with Maddon in Chicago.

In giving the Martinez, 53, a three-year contract, Nationals ownership broke with longstanding (and controversial) form. Assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske also left to become the Angels hitting coach.

The Nationals fired manager Dusty Baker after they failed to advance in the NLDS, losing in five games to the Cubs.

Speaking to the media, Nolte said they do not plan to provide any comment or interviews to the police at this time. People continued to stream by several memorials in honor of Sherin on Thursday near her home.

In a conference call earlier in October, Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo called Baker "a Hall of Fame-type manager", but said that the expectations of the team had grown along with their success. Martinez, who has served as Maddon's bench coach in both Tampa Bay and Chicago, will take over from Dusty Baker, who was sacked following the team's first round exit from the postseason. When Maddon became the Chicago Cubs' skipper before the 2015 season, Martinez followed him there, where together the pair helped lead the Cubs to the 2016 World Series title, the team's first championship in 108 years. He was told he wasn't returning a week into the offseason.

Official word of a deal likely won't come until Monday morning, as Major League Baseball prefers its teams to hold off on major announcements until after the World Series. Along the way, Martinez interviewed for a few manager openings, including to replace Davey Johnson in Washington, a job that eventually went to the hilariously miscast Matt Williams.

The two sides hadn't negotiated a finalized contract as of Saturday night, but a source confirmed the finalized deal (which was first reported by The Washington Post) this morning.
