Forecasters expect Ophelia to continue in that general motion Thursday, but called for the storm to speed up while moving toward the northeast Friday.
After maintaining tropical storm status for several days, the National Hurricane Center officially upgraded Ophelia after satellite measurements of 75mph winds were recorded.
Forecasters say Ophelia has become the 10th hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic season, churning far out at sea and posing no immediate threat to land.
Ophelia is forecast to track northeast through Monday. "I thought that storm was dead and buried in the central Atlantic".
Ophelia strengthened into a hurricane Wednesday afternoon.

Some of Ophelia's rain bands are likely to hit the Azores islands over the weekend. It is now forecast to stay west of Portugal before bringing gusty winds and rain to Ireland early next week. Incidentally, all of them have arrived in the months of August or September, except for Hurricane Fran, which swept past the area in October 1973 and Hurricane Alex in January 2016.
Ophelia developed into a tropical storm less than 48 hours after Hurricane Nate made landfall on the northern Gulf Coast of the United States.
According to NOAA's historical hurricane database, only 15 hurricanes have passed within 200 nautical miles of the Azores since 1851.
