It is believed a seven victims one of which was a teacher were tragically killed after a security guard at the nursery doused them in alcohol before setting them on fire.
Damiao was present at the day care outside of his working hours and said to carry a pink backpack containing flammable liquid, possibly alcohol or gasoline, which he used to set fire to the victims and himself.
The guard, who was aged about 50 and named as Damião Soares dos Santos, was badly burnt and later died of his injuries.
About 25 people, mostly children, were injured in the attack and are being treated at local hospitals for burns. BBC reports that some of those who were injured may need to be airlifted to specialized trauma centers in the state capital of Belo Horizonte.
Brazilian President Michel Temer expressed his sympathies via Twitter.

He additionally looked into another potential focus in Beantown - the Boston Center for the Arts, authorities said . There is no indication he ever traveled to Boston or Chicago , the officials said.
Mr Temer said that, as the father of a school-age child, he understood "this must be an extremely painful loss" for the parents. "We hope these things will not happen again in Brazil".
Speaking about the horrific incident a police spokesperson said there were up to 70 people in the school at the time of the attack which seen the building quickly go up in flames.
Local media reports that dos Santos was sacked from his post in September, upon returning from his annual leave reportedly with a health condition.
He allegedly came to the center Thursday to turn in paperwork before starting the blaze.
