Chicago's Week 13 opponent announced Tuesday that they will be starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the former New England Patriots second-round pick who San Francisco traded for at this year's deadline.

Garoppolo played the last 1:07 during last Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks after C.J.

The Eastern Illinois alum spent the first three-plus seasons of his career backing up Tom Brady after being selected in the second round of the 2014 National Football League draft. He made his debut with his new team on Sunday in mop-up duty after Beathard left with a leg injury.

Garoppolo, an Eastern Illinois product, won his first start by rallying the Patriots past the Arizona Cardinals 23-21 in the opener, throwing for 264 yards and a touchdown. Beathard threw three touchdown passes compared to five interceptions in his five starts, during which the Niners went 1-4.

Shanahan withheld Garoppolo from starting in the three games since being acquired because he was still learning the complex playbook and verbiage required to call plays in the huddle. He also threw with a few of the team's receivers. He finished with four touchdowns, six interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 69.2. However, he's been praised by coaches and teammates for his toughness since taking over the starting role.

Beathard suffered a bruised knee and strained hip Sunday, but neither was deemed serious.

"When you're making a long-term decision on someone for your organization, for you to pay him the amount of money that you do for quarterbacks, that's a big deal", Shanahan said.

Additionally, it has been nearly a foregone conclusion that Garoppolo would eventually work his way into the starting lineup since being traded. It is unclear whether Beathard's injuries had anything to do with Shanahan's decision.
