Law enforcement issues warning for drivers this Thanksgiving

CHP says that during the same time past year, twenty-seven people died in collisions on state highways. Five of those fatalities were due to impaired driving and six were due to being unbuckled.

"It's going to be a lot of people out during the roads during the holiday this year", says Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G, Master Sgt. Criss Turnipseed.

California Highway Patrol officials also warned about the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt during one of the biggest travel weekends of the year.

As part of its annual "Arrive Alive" campaign, State troopers are reminding motorists to buckle up.

Troopers will be assigned every 20 miles of I-40 from 11 a.m.to 11 p.m. throughout the challenge.

The holiday traffic reporting period begins Tuesday night at midnight, and ends at about the same time Sunday night-making it a five-day holiday weekend.

"Always wear your seat belt, obey the speed limit and designate a driver", adds Sgt. Garic Warner of the Highway Patrol.

"Whether we are traveling a mile or a hundred miles we need to put that seat belt on". To report an unsafe driver, dial *47 on a cell phone and provide a vehicle description, location, direction of travel and license plate number if possible.

"We are out there enforcing the law", said Angle.

Troopers will step up enforcement from 11 a.m.to 11 p.m. on Wednesday and 9 a.m.to 9 p.m. on Sunday in an effort to keep drivers safe.
