Modi leads tributes to Sardar Patel on birth anniversary

The three-km run witnessed the participation of 15,000 to 20,000 people including school children, elders, sports- persons, artists and politicians. Near the India Gate C-Hexagon-Shah Jahan Road radial, the 1.5km run came to an end.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday administered oath to citizens of national unity on the occasion of the 142nd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. "We are proud of his contribution to India before we attained freedom and during the early years after we became independent", Mr Modi said. "In such times India can proudly say it is the nation that has tied a variety of cultures, traditions and faiths in one thread", Modi said before flagging off the "Run for Unity" here.

He was speaking at a function to mark the birth anniversary of Patel and the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi. Therefore it is important in a country like India to keep reiterating its mantra of unity and to constantly look for ways to strengthen the tradition of unity in diversity.
