The battle between West Bengal and Odisha over the origin of Rosogolla ended on a sweet note for West Bengal with the State winning the Geographical Indication (GI) for this iconic sweet.

West Bengal on 14th November 2017 won the long bitter battle over Rosgulla as Geographical Indications (GI), a Chennai-based Registry announced that one of India's signature candies originated in the state and not Odisha. Both the states claimed ownership over its generation.

Meanwhile, renowned researchers in the State, however, claimed there is still time for Odisha government to submit its documentary evidence to get the GI tag for Odisha's rasagolla and rasagolla as well.

"Odisha to demand GI tag for "Odisha Rasagolla" and the GI tag given to "Banglar Rosgolla" is specific to West Bengal", the CMO's statement added.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee celebrated the news with a tweet saying: "Sweet news for us all".

West Indies tour of Pakistan moved to March
It is a very happy moment for Pakistan that after nearly 8 years, an worldwide team is coming for playing a full series. As per the agreement, the first series is to be held in Pakistan by the end of March 2018.

After settling the conflict over the origiin of the sweet, Bengal was given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. And since then this famous sweet became news for everyone across India.

West Bengal in its application had provided proof of origin - historical records dating back to 1896.

State Food Processing Minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah expressed his "happiness and relief" and recalled the state had earlier secured the GI tag for "Joynagarer Moa", a mouth-watering winter snack made of puffed rice and palm jaggery. After media reports of Odisha's claim to be the birth place of Rosogolla and following initiative to get a GI tag on the sweet, the West Bengal government and sweet makers presented documents to prove them wrong. "We are all happy that now we can say with full rights that rosogolla belongs to us".

Rosogulla has finally been lapped up by West Bengal and now the argument will finally be laid to rest. Darjeeling Tea is the first product of the State to be accorded the GI.

The GI registry arrived at Tuesday's decision after holding multiple hearing at its office in the city's satellite township Salt Lake.
