Free Christmas tree recycling underway in Tuscaloosa

Christmas trees can be born again as valuable garden mulch and compost, highly valued by gardeners for its acidic qualities. Finally, those with Friday garbage collection will have their trees collected on the fourth week of the month.

Those in the French Quarter and the Downtown Development District, which are served by Empire Services, should place their trees curbside before 4 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11. Residents can put their trees where trash and recycling are normally placed along the curb, and the trees will be collected when trash and recycling are picked up by the Department of Public Works.

They will be accepting live Christmas trees, devoid of lights, tinsel, and ornaments, tires and electronics, excluding televisions.

In St. Charles Parish, the Public Works Department will pick up trees curbside around the parish on January 8, 9 and 10.

Badger Mountain Community Park is no longer a drop off for trees.

That's your Christmas tree, which let's face it, has outlived its yearly objective.

Rohnert Park residents can have their trees picked up on their regular collection day the weeks of January 8-Jan. 19.

Since the program started 13 years ago, more than 1,200 trees have been recycled.

"The Christmas tree provides structure for some fish to hide in, some fish to lay their eggs when they spawn, and as well as predatory fish to hide, that way they can hunt their pray".

UNDECORATED trees can be dropped off at these locations and no fee or permit is required. Now they're ground up at the site and then hauled, said Jollymore.

That includes gift bags, foil, shiny or glitter wrapping paper.
