Manchester City Set To Fork Out £60m For Southampton's Van Dijk

This season has been something of a horror show for Virgil van Dijk and Southampton.

Pep Guardiola has made the signing of 26-year-old Van Dijk his main priority in January, with City increasingly confident of beating Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona to his signature. However, while a move never materialized for the Dutchman, things could be different in the winter window, especially as it now looks like Barcelona have also entered the race to sign him. But Guardiola also believes that Van Dijk has all the tools in his locker to eventually establish himself as a valuable member of the first-team. With a league of Premier League clubs interested in him, including the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and even Chelsea, it looks like they now have competition from Spain.

"We tried to do the best for the team", said the ex-Alaves coach, who endured sections of the travelling Southampton support at Wembley signing "you're getting sacked in the morning". Current Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed that the player is on the verge of leaving St. Mary's. But the new boss has simply put it down to picking the best squad.

Manchester City are edging ever closer to agreeing a fee for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

"In this squad, I have a lot of players that can play".

Liverpool are so close to having a great team as the front four of Mohamed Salah, Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are as good as I have seen watching the club over the last 50 years. Twelve momnths on, Van Dijk is the candidate with the most options to join the Premier League leaders.
