New Orleans • The NFL said it was in contact with the medical staff of the Carolina Panthers about the handling of an injury suffered by quarterback Cam Newton during Sunday's playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints, trying to determine whether the league's concussion protocols were properly followed.
Newton took a hard hit in the fourth quarter in which he claimed his helmet came down over his eyes and hurt his right eye.
"We are in contact now with the Panthers' medical staff and we will not comment further until those conversations are completed", the National Football League said in a written statement issued through a spokesman. Medical personnel looked at him as a he took a seat, and Newton missed one play as Derek Anderson relieved him. He led a touchdown march that got Carolina within one score, but their next and final possession ended with a turnover on downs.
According to the policy, if the protocol was not properly followed, the team is subject to discipline.
Newton was evaluated in the medical tent on the Panthers' sideline.

Newton echoed Rivera's assessment that he was poked in the eye.
Newton said after the game the problem was with his eye, not a head injury. He also made one of the most important plays late in the fourth quarter when a near-sack resulted in intentional grounding on Newton, helping the Saints prevent the Panthers from coming back.
The changes came in conjunction with a decision not to punish the Houston Texans for their handling of a concussion suffered by quarterback Tom Savage.
Rivera did not believe Newton had not demonstrated any post-concussion symptoms Monday.
'NFL concussion protocol should have dictated taking out Cam Newton and examining him immediately after direct hit to his head, ' Pat Leonard wrote. After the Week 3 game, Jordan made some jokes about Newton's fashion choices. "We're going to send him a nice little bottle of Jordan wine". I hate that I couldn't do enough to get a win today for a lot of guys that I think so highly of. "But again, I'm not the doctor", Rivera said.
"Yeah, you know, Carolina picked him up so the brothers could reunite", Jordan said.
