Can a team hire a new coach without firing its current coach?

Then the words many have been waiting to hear: "please welcome the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Mr. Jon Gruden".

The Raiders almost got there in Gruden's first stint from 1998-2001 but the team lost to Baltimore in the 2000 AFC title game and followed that with the memorable loss in the snow against the Patriots that still haunts the franchise. That was the game that did him in, causing Davis to trade Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for four draft picks and cash.

On an overhead projector in the team's weightlifting facility, the Raiders showed footage of their past - 34-year-old Gruden.

Raiders owner Mark Davis called Gruden's introduction as the new Raiders head coach a "big f--g deal". I've asked for Marshawn Lynch in production meetings and have never met him. "I really haven't. I'm not a real deep philosophical person".

What pulled him back after nine years away from the game was not the lucrative contract offer of the Oakland Raiders, he says, but rather, unfinished business as the team's head coach. "I feel a lot of loyalty and responsibility to get the Raiders going again".

Fans lined up outside the headquarters with Chucky dolls, Super Bowl posters and their team attire hours before the Noon presser. I think he's got a huge upside.

Davis said. "And by far to get Jon Gruden was the toughest". Could we see an emphasis on pass protection to allow the 26-year-old more time to deliver downfield throws on complex schemes?

For nearly an hour before Jon Gruden arrived, the weight room at Raiders headquarters buzzed with former players, high-ranking team officials, media and anyone and everyone wanting a glimpse of Gruden's official return to coaching. They hated playing for him.

The Raiders, under Jack Del Rio at the time, had just lost five of six games.

While the two hadn't yet spoken as of Tuesday, Gruden, who coached the Raiders before from 1998-2001, said he believes he and Lynch have something in common. This was a moment six years in the making, the conclusion of a quest started shortly after Mark took control following owner Al Davis' death.

As for phase two, the move to Las Vegas, will Gruden's presence really have that much of an impact in 2020? "As Jon said, and it was a great comment, you get what you deserve". Until Tuesday, though, he opted instead to stay in the friendly, and well-compensated, confines of ESPN's "Monday Night Football" broadcast booth.

Many factors resulted in the poor record; one of them was the regression of Derek Carr who became the second richest quarterback in the National Football League last summer. He just missed one game, but clearly wasn't the same, especially after he had an MVP-type season in 2016.

There is this theory floating around the Raiders that one big contract was offered to precipitate the signing of another, that owner Mark Davis awarded quarterback Derek Carr a nine-figure deal last offseason with the intention of eventually offering another to the man he wanted to coach him. It's possible, but we know Gruden will tailor a system to the players as opposed to forcing assets into a cookie-cutter offensive system. "With Greg Olsen and the system we will put in place that will demand a lot from him, I think that's going to unlock the greatness in him. But I'm very, very excited to have him as our quarterback".

Neither Gruden nor Davis would go into detail about the coach's contract but he did confirm he will not have an ownership stake in the team.
