On average, the distance from the center of the moon to the center of Earth is 238,000 miles. The lunar eclipse happens to be the first lunar eclipse of 2018 as well.On January 31st this year something rare will happen to the moon. For the first time since 1866, a total lunar eclipse will occur with the blue moon, or second full moon of the month, which-like the one visible on New Year's Day-will also be a supermoon.

The last time all that happened together was nearly 152 years ago. The reddish color of the eclipsed moon earned it the name Blood Moon. Along the U.S. Atlantic Seaboard, for instance, the moon will have only just begun to enter the darkest part of Earth's shadow, the umbra, at 6:48 a.m. EST when it will disappear from view below the west-northwest horizon. About four weeks prior to the occurrence of the supermoon, a "cold moon" supermoon rose in the evening on December 3.

The start of the year 2018 began with a rare version of super moon that was witnessed by people all over the world.

If you could compare them side by side, most people would see that supermoons really are brighter and slightly bigger than a normal full moon.

Supermoons, meteor shower to light up the sky this January

The term is used for when there are two full moons in one calendar month. The total eclipse of a blue moon has not happened in more than a 150 years apparently.

This happens at least twice a year - but in this case, it's the fact that all these events coincide that makes it so cool. Hawaii, Alaska and northwestern Canada will observe the complete event. A royal blue blood supermoon will crown this spectacular season on January 31. "Folks in the eastern United States, where the eclipse will be partial, will have to get up in the morning to see it", said Noah Petro, a research scientist from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center on the agency's website.

The New Year's full moon is called a wolf moon, named for the howls of the hungry animals during midwinter.
