John Engler, who was Governor of MI from 1990-2002, is an alumnus of the school, and was appointed interim president by the board of trustees on Wednesday after a unanimous vote.

Engler was elected Michigan's 46th governor in 1990 and served until 2003.

It all started when former MSU doctor Larry Nassar had a week-long of court trials, facing many of his former victims in a horrendous sexual abuse scandal. It comes after multiple women accused the school of ignoring their complaints of sexual assault against Larry Nassar. About 60 girls and women are expected to testify during the hearing, similar to a hearing in nearby Lansing that ended last week after more than 150 victims came forward.

Michigan State's prior president, Lou Anna Simon, resigned last week in the growing scandal over whether the university ignored signs that Larry Nassar, a faculty member, for years abused girls and women he examined through his work with the USA and Michigan State gymnastics teams.

Several faculty members and students said they had been given the impression that board members wanted their input on an interim chief and felt blindsided with Engler's selection.

One student felt compelled to jump onto the board table to be heard. "This is not the democratic process".

Previously, Beekman served as vice president and secretary of the Board of Trustees since January 1, 2018.

Over the weekend, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said he will lead his investigation into the way the university handled the Nassar case.

Prince William and Kate are just like us: They shop at Ikea!
It's a odd feeling to have the Duchess of Cambridge , Kate Middleton , make a public appearance, and disappoint us with her look. And we have to give props to Kate as the pregnant royal duchess is in her third trimester, but still down for athletic pursuits.

"I have confidence that John Engler will reflect our desire to keep a focus on survivors and the victims", said Brian Breslin, the board's chairman. On Facebook, she called Engler a "deep political insider" at a time Michigan State needs outside accountability. Students disrupted the meeting as the board selected former MI governor John Engler as interim president. A member of the MSU Faculty Senate proposed a vote of no confidence, which drew applause from the students in the room. MSU has failed you, in many direct and indirect ways, and we the faculty of the University extend our deepest and most honest apologies.

Izzo is not scheduled to face the media again until after Wednesday's game in East Lansing against Penn State.

Also coming on board is another former MI governor, Jim Blanchard, a Democrat, who will be named as a senior adviser.

The choice was applauded by both politicians and people who have worked with the men.

"The board has said in the last couple days that they want to work with us, they want to be transparent and I'm hoping that they will do that".

"The university administration has failed to suspend or expel the players from MSU, and has not even released a statement condemning the assault". Before the vote, all expressed their support for Engler.

The move to bring in Blanchard was created to get a unanimous vote of support for Engler, empowering him to make house-cleaning moves to change what Democratic Trustee Brian Mosallam called "a culture that enables sexual misconduct" on the East Lansing campus.
