Nintendo Switch sales hit 14.86 million worldwide in 10 months

Plenty to keep you and your Switch going far into 2019. In the first year we'll have game fans and Nintendo fans buy it. The Wii U had been a disaster, allowing rivals Sony Corp.

According to Nintendo's latest financial reports, Switch had an incredible last quarter of 2017 - doubling the system's sell-u in the holiday period.

Instead, Switch sales blew past expectations. What makes them so sure?

Nintendo attributes a good chunk of that growth to the youngest member of its console family, and explained that Switch sales "rose substantially" during the holiday season.

Nintendo had updated the number of Switch consoles shipped until the end of past year and also shared a forecast of estimated expected units to ship until the end of March 2018. Switch now sits at 14.86 million units sold compared to Wii U's 13.56 million units.

The Kyoto-based company raised its profit forecast for the year ending March to ¥160bn, from ¥120bn, versus analysts' estimate of ¥144bn. And the increased forecast on Wednesday shows management expects better-than-expected sales. It sold 5.2 million units in other markets.

It's safe to say that the console has been a welcome surprise, even for Nintendo.

Super Mario Odyssey has sold a whopping 9.07m copies since its launch in October (that's comfortably more than Star Wars Battlefront 2 did on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). However, this means that Nintendo is back in the game after a worrying generation of console sales and lackluster titles, so the future looks as bright as ever for Mario and crew.

Nikkei: The Wii which was released in 2006 surpassed 100 million total sales.

The next few months will bring some big things to the Switch that could continue this momentum.
