Though the motive behind the attack is not known, Siddaramaiah said that Sharma is a contractor who filed a police complaint, which was later taken up and investigated by the lokayukta's office. It has been found that the accused had complained against 15-17 public servants in connection with supply of furniture. The accused reportedly went inside the office by claiming he wanted to speak to the Lokayukta.

Hours after Lokayukta Justice Vishwanath Shetty, his relative in Udupi expressed serious concerns over security and said that if an official like the Lokayukta could be attackd in his office, how could ordinary people feel safe. "But the case was dismissed after due process in December", Kumar said.

Shetty, in his early 70s, was rushed to a nearby hospital and is prima facie stated to be out of danger.

Siddaramaiah apprised Singh about the incident and the steps taken to ensure punishment for the culprit, sources said. Opposition leaders from the BJP and JDS have already shamed the congress government for bringing down law and order of the place.
