Milwaukee County health outcomes among worst in the state

The healthiest county is right here in central Ohio-Delaware County.

In 2018, Broome County ranks 53 in health outcomes, out of the 62 New York State counties.

The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have been collaborating on this report for years, this being the ninth report released. Douglas County was at the top of the list, followed by Eureka and Washoe counties.

Dane County ranked 14th out of the state's 72 county's in the survey.

"We can see there are meaningful gaps that exist not only by place but also by race", said Karen Odegaard, community coach with the county rankings team.

The county's ranking for health factors - 30 measures relating to health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic and physical environment values - has been up and down. "Using this same information, we are also able to identify new areas of need and direct our resources as appropriate", said Dr. Joe Iser, Chief Health Officer of the Southern Nevada Health District.

Clinical care saw the greatest overall improvements in Rock County in the data provided this year.

Orange County improved from being ranked 23rd in health outcomes and 24th in health factors previous year to 21st in health outcomes and 17th in health factors. The rankings are based on a series of factors such as access to quality education, jobs and housing. The same weight is applied to poor physical health days, and Douglas County falls in the worst 20 in that category as well.

The report showed 36 percent of Putnam County children live in poverty, while only 26 percent do in Union.

A number of reasons can explain a county's change in rank, including the health outcomes and the performance of other county's, according to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Chera Sevcik, community health administrator for Martin and Faribault counties, described a similar outlook on the rankings. "And so I think this provides good data for having those types of conversations".

McLean County has an adult obesity rate higher than the state average, but showed improvements in reducing smoking, unemployment and children in poverty.

"When we get people - all people - involved, not just policymakers but community members, and we start having conversations and we start taking action on a multitude of different factors, that's when we'll see progress", Trujillo says.
