A freezing rain warning was issued for the region, surrounding areas, and the GTA on Friday, ahead of the storm system that could leave most of the southern province covered in a thick glaze of ice by Sunday, forcing school cancellations.
Environment Canada blames the wet weather in Southern Ontario on a slow moving system from the Gulf of Mexico that is colliding with Arctic winds.
"Damaging winds will be possible, which will bring down numerous trees and power lines, which may still be coated with ice", the watch said.
Environment Canada says the temperature will fall below the freezing mark Saturday and rain will change over into freezing rain possibly mixed with ice pellets at times in the afternoon lasting into the evening.
Environment Canada is calling for widespread frozen drizzle Sunday morning before changing to rain in the afternoon. Areas just north of I-96 are most likely to see ice accumulation.

The National Weather Service has put in place an Ice Storm Warning through 2 p.m. on Sunday for the counties of Monroe, Orleans, Livingston, Genesee, Wyoming, and Erie.
