The court room was filled during the arraignment with police officers from Yarmouth and Barnstable Police Departments during the arraignment.

Nero was shot as his handler, Yarmouth police officer Sean Gannon, tried to carry out an arrest warrant for Thomas M. Latanowich in a quiet neighborhood in the Barnstable village of Marstons Mills Thursday afternoon. WCVB reported that the K-9 officer was transported to the hospital where he died.

Nero, said Xiarhos, is under around-the-clock law enforcement protection and "will remain in the care and control of the Yarmouth Police Department". "Sean was a wonderful young man, and I'm not just saying that".

"The sky was the limit for him. He's going to be sorely missed".

Suspect Todd Latanowich, 29, of Somerville, Mass., has a long criminal record, Yarmouth police said.

Latanowich was held without bail, at Barnstable District Court. Yarmouth Police described him back in 2016 as "a notorious and violent criminal with 111 prior criminal charges". At the time of Thursday's shooting, Latanowich was on probation after pleading guilty to illegal gun possession and drug charges in 2010.

"He is stable but not out of the woods", the Dennis Veterinary Hospital told WCVB. Flags are also flying at half-staff in his honor.

The officer, Sean Gannon, was shot around 3:30 p.m.in the Marston Mills neighborhood of the MA town, according to The Cape Cod Times. "But we still have a job to do and we will do it".
