The nomination of Mike Pompeo, the CIA Director, for the USA secretary of state post was on Wednesday opposed by Democrats as they raked up his remarks on Indians, Muslims and other ethnic minorities, according to the Hindustan Times. State Department staffers, demoralized after a tumultuous first year of President Donald Trump's administration, gave a round of applause to Pompeo, who responded as he boarded the aircraft with a casual, "Hi, I'm Mike".

Senators voted 57-42 in favor of Pompeo, who had faced stiff resistance from Democrats anxious about his reputation for hawkishness and past harsh statements about homosexuality and Islam.

U.S. senators said Pompeo was expected to hit the ground running and head off nearly immediately to a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Friday.

Trump, who abruptly fired Tillerson last month, welcomed Pompeo's confirmation, saying in a statement, "Having a patriot of Mike's enormous talent, energy, and intellect leading the Department of State will be an incredible asset for our country at this critical time in history". Six Democrats joined them.

Shortly after the confirmation, Trump said he was "pleased" with the Senate's confirmation of Pompeo to serve as the U.S. 70th Secretary of State. "He has my support", Trump said.

"I'm delighted to be secretary of state and completely humbled by the responsibility".
