Trump Orders TPP Review by Kudlow, Lighthizer, Sen. Sasse Says

A spokesman for New Zealand's Trade Minister David Parker says: "We are aware of the media reports and our trade reps. but New Zealand is the official depository under CPTPP and we are yet to receive anything official".

Trump is also reconsidering his stance on the behemoth trans-Pacific trade deal as he inches closer to a trade war with China.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse says Trump said during a White House meeting with Midwest governors and lawmakers that he had "deputized" USA trade representative Robert Lighthizer and economic adviser Larry Kudlow to look into the US rejoining the TPP. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., told Fox News as he left the White House.

The Nebraska Senator cautioned however that "The president is a guy who likes to blue-sky a lot and entertain a lot of different ideas, but he multiple times reaffirmed the point that TPP might be easier for us to join now". In January, he said he would be open to reconsidering the deal if the U.S. could strike a "substantially better" agreement.

In February, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the US was interested in reentering the trade agreement, but he quickly backed off those comments, making it sound like a deal would not materialize.

During his first week in office, Trump withdrew the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement. The pact, negotiated by the Obama administration, was seen as a way to prod China into economic reforms.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is an attack on America's business.

Trump had lumped TPP into a group of agreements he opposed because of his general thought that the United States was getting a raw deal from other nations in trade. And many economists say the best way to combat a rising China and pressure it to open its market is through multilateral trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which create favorable trading terms for participants.

Sasse said Trump looked directly at Kudlow during the meeting and told him to "get it done".

Kevin Kennedy, president of a steel fabrication business in Texas, says tariffs on steel and aluminum imports have led US steel producers to raise their prices by 40 percent. The U.S. will come up with a good deal and "agriculture will be taken care of", Trump said.
