Deadly storm claims over 20 lives in India

The storms largely affected three districts in Rajasthan - Alwar, Bharatpur and Dholpur - where at least 31 people were killed.

In UP, Agra district was the worst hit, accounting for 36 deaths and injuries to 35 others, officials said.

Most of the victims were hit by falling walls, trees and electric pylons and houses that collapsed.

As reported by Hindustan Times, 12 people were killed in Bharatpur, four in Alwar, 11 in Dholpur and one each in Jhunjhunu and Bikaner.

The report suggested that a few were reportedly undergoing primary treatment at Dholpur and one critical patient was referred to Jaipur. "Relief will be given to the affected within 24 hours". Major destruction was reported from Alwar as the entire district plunged into darkness after the power department cut electricity supply when electricity poles fell snapping power cables. Officials said the death toll may cross 50 as numerous injured were still critical.

At least 27 of the deaths took place in three districts after Rajasthan after a high-intensity squall followed by rain on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, PTI reported.

The collector said a survey of the damaged property has also been ordered as thunderstorm is in the list of national calamities. "My condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives", Vasundhara Raje tweeted this morning. Bharatpur divisional commissioner Subir Kumar said that a compensation of Rs 50,000 will be given to the family of the deceased from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. We are extremely grieved at the loss of lives in state and stand with the victims in this hour of tragedy... "Blood donation camps and Janhit programs can be continued by organisers".

Weather department officials in New Delhi said the storm was caused by a collision of rival eastern and western weather systems over the humid northern plains.
