The three-year Jammu and Kashmir government, wracked by bitter political feuds and worsening security challenges, collapsed today with the BJP pulling out of its alliance with the PDP setting the stage for yet another round of governor's rule.

While the PDP would repeatedly say it will never allow dilution of this provision, the BJP would vow that abrogation of Article 370 and its upshot including Article 35A are "core agendas" of the party and that it could never abandon it.

"The priority of the Central government is now to put an end to the cross border terrorism and establish peace in Jammu and Kashmir".

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said in Delhi the BJP had committed a "Himalayan blunder" by forming the alliance, which had devastated the state in "ruins".

Madhav mentioned the Centre's announcement of a ceasefire during Ramzan and the appointment of an interlocutor for talks with stakeholders in the Valley as confidence-building measures.

What led to the split?

He said there is anger among BJP ministers too that government does not consult them whenever Deputy Commissioners, SSPs and other top officials are transferred. The state is India's only Muslim-dominated state, which has a special provision barring those from outside the state from settling there. Critics accuse it of peddling "soft separatism" revolving around reconciliation with Pakistan and separatist groups fighting against Indian rule in Kashmir. He tweeted: "J&K needs a Mahagatbandhan of NC, PDP, Congress, CPI (M) and non party democrats to isolate the BJP on the one hand and promote harmony between regions and religions on the other".

The three years of its rule has evaporated the little sympathy and support it had. "Ideologically, the two are completely different parties". While the PDP called for more restraint, the BJP advocated a more hardline approach.

Injured in Osaka, Japan earthquake

With the process of a new government formation in the state following the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed taking time, the state was placed under Governor's Rule.

The use of pellet guns to disperse protests was condemned around the world as thousands of civilians suffered injuries.

Mehbooba Mufti knows more than anyone else about what she has lost in the pursuit of power.

After the BJP's sudden but expected break-up with partner PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti seems to have withdrawn into a shell.

The BJP's national general secretary also added, "We had to respect the mandate of the people".

Later in the day, Vohra had meeting with National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah who said that opined that Governor's rule and elections was the only option left.

Forming a government will require the support of 44 of the 89 legislators in the state assembly. "Our leaders have been facing a lot of difficulties from PDP in developmental works in Jammu and Ladakh", Madhav said. PDP is the largest party in the state.
