Heat warning extended before strong storms bring relief

Hazy, hot and humid conditions are expected for central Pennsylvania again on Monday as the heat wave continues to broil the area, according to forecasters. Chicago's Midway International Airport hit a heat index of 110 degrees.

An excessive heat warning, issued when the heat and humidity make it feel like it's 105 degrees or higher, will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.

A HEAT ADVISORY has been issued for the CT shoreline. The heat index soared to over 100 degrees in some sections of New York, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Sunday.

A multiday heat wave that brought a heat index reading of 112 degrees to Chicago on Saturday will reach its peak in the Northeast on Sunday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson said temperatures are expected to reach 90 degrees today, with warmer weather inland away from the sea breeze.

Cities that could see severe weather Saturday include Des Moines, Iowa; Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; and Minneapolis. Very high humidity will be sustained and even increased due to still wet soils from recent rains, evapotranspiration from a growing corn crop and a replenishing of already high dew-point air flowing into our area from the Plains and Mississippi Valley.
