New wildfires sweep through California, burning homes

In a Utah mountain area, a wildfire that destroyed 90 structures and forced more than 1,100 people to flee was growing, but fire officials hoped to gain more control after their work Friday.

A wildfire raging through drought-stricken timber and brush near California's border with OR killed one person and destroyed 40 buildings as it burned largely out of control, authorities said today.

Authorities estimate at least 20 homes have burned in a wildfire raging in the hills above Goleta in Santa Barbara County.

Though officials suspect fireworks, the investigation into the cause of the fire remains active.

The family stayed the night with friends in town, but Durtschi couldn't sleep.

California was one of several Western states where recent wildfires have destroyed homes and forced thousands of people to evacuate.

Near Los Angeles, Cal Fire was battling the 100-acre Valley Fire and the 100-acre Box Fire (15 percent contained), both in San Bernardino County. The fire is not now threatening the city of Ashland, the city's emergency management team reported Saturday. Officials announced that much of the mandatory evacuation area will be reduced to a warning area on Saturday at 5 PM. He said he hadn't yet told his two oldest children their home was gone. Fire managers said it was 55 percent contained.

Firefighters battling the Klamathon Fire along the California-Oregon border Friday discovered a body within a residence during a welfare check of an evacuated area, authorities said.

On the ground, Cal Fire was joined by agencies from the surrounding communities and Oregon.

The fire is one of several that have ignited in southern California Friday, where temperatures topped 100 degrees.

Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol had asked the Oregon Department of Transportation to stop all traffic heading south on Interstate 5 near Ashland after the fire began. Winds are now pushing the fire southwest.

Numerous fires along the highway and open fields are made by vehicles or farm equipment.

"When we came out, there were fist-sized embers falling all over the place", he said. Saturday morning, Cal Fire San Diego tweeted that firefighters continue to make progress, and containment has risen to 30 percent.
