One part of Mueller's inquiry and congressional investigations has focused on a meeting months before the November election in Trump Tower in NY between Russian officials, Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, and other campaign aides.
"Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower", the president tweeted. In the Twitter message, Trump claims that the meeting was "totally legal" and is "done all the time in politics". "I'm sure, I'm sure I did", Trump Jr.
The Russian delegation at the Trump Tower meeting was led by Kremlin-linked lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, who as Inquisitr noted, later admitted to being an "informant" for a high-ranking Kremlin official - in other words, according to experts, a spy.
That misleading statement, which the White House later admitted was drafted with the president's help, said the Trump Tower meeting was about a law governing adoptions from Russian Federation rather than a meeting to get negative information about Clinton.
The declaration that the meeting was indeed to get information on Clinton does open the door to this meeting being an attempt by Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the election, and in spite of Trump's claim that it was legal, still opens the possibility of crimes having been committed.
Reports on Saturday indicated Trump was getting concerned that his son, Donald Trump Jr, could become entangled in Mueller's investigation.
Asked on Sunday why he had denied the president's involvement, one of Trump's lawyers Jay Sekulow told ABC that "I had bad information at that point".
It was later reported that was false and the president was involved in constructing his son's misleading statement.
When the meeting first became public knowledge a year ago, Trump personally dictated a statement for public release claiming that the meeting was called to discuss resuming adoptions of orphaned Russian babies by United States citizens.

"Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don jr attended in order to get info on an opponent", Trump wrote on Twitter. Also, Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani confirmed that there was a preparation meeting that occurred between Trump's campaign team on June 7th, the same day as the speech announcement.
President Trump repeatedly insists there was no collusion between his campaign and the Russian government, and he will undoubtedly continue to maintain that.
The President this week has for the first time said that Attorney General Jeff Sessions "should stop" the Mueller probe.
"I had bad information at that time", the lawyer said.
Trump's latest offensive against stories he does not like about his 18-month presidency came hours after he rallied supporters in the midwestern state of Ohio.
"He walks in, he wants to take over, he wants to make the deposition his deposition, even though it's mine".
"It doesn't mean illegality, it doesn't mean criminality", he said. "We are fully confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Donald Trump Jr.in the various investigations".
"The president can't distinguish between any allegations of conspiracy against his campaign and the broader problem of Russian Federation continuing to interfere in our elections", Schiff said on CBS's "Face the Nation". "They can also cause War!" "But, instead, the exact opposite message is being sent and that is: As long as the Russians interfere on Donald Trump's side in the midterms, (Russian President) Vladimir Putin can count on the president to never call him out".
