Driver likely intoxicated in crash that killed 4

In Wisconsin, the school, the community of Scouts and most of Chippewa were preparing to attend a memorial at 6 p.m. Sunday at the elementary school the three girls who were killed attended.

A relative of a girl who was not hurt in the crash said the children were fourth graders at Halmstad Elementary School in Chippewa Falls, 180 miles west of Green Bay. Girl Scouts sang songs in memory of the victims, who were members of Troop 3055.

After turning himself in to police, Treu admitted to police that he and the passenger in his vehicle had intentionally inhaled chemicals, which is commonly referred to as "huffing", just prior to the incident. One girl survived and was in critical condition Saturday night.

Woldhuis said the mother and daughter who died attended Chippewa Valley Bible Church, where he presides.

Counselors, psychologists, therapy dogs and faith leaders will again be at the two elementary schools where the victims were students.

"This is a hard time for our students, families and staff", Eliopoulos said in a message to parents.

The 21-year-old driver, Colten Treu of Chippewa Falls, later surrendered.

Teddy bears, balloons and candles sat on two wooden benches in front of Halmstad Elementary School on November 4 while dozens of families met inside with faith leaders and counselors.

A fourth girl struck by the pickup was in critical condition Saturday evening.

The three Girl Scouts who were killed in the crash have been identified as Jayna Kelley, 9, of Lake Hallie, Autum Helgeson, 10, of Lake Hallie, Haylee Hinkle, 10, of Lafayette. But to his credit, the 21-year-old came back later and turned himself in to the police. He's expected to face 13 possible charges, including four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, sheriff officials told the Star Tribune.

Acevedo says Girl Scouts everywhere stand with "our sister Girl Scouts in Wisconsin to grieve and comfort one another in the wake of this bad tragedy".

They were picking up trash along the highway when they were cut down. Police identified him as Colton Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls.

"Our hearts are broken", said Sheri Jasper, board member of the Girl Scouts Northwestern Great Lakes.

Grief counselors will be available for local students at school on Monday.

"The Lake Hallie Police Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families involved", police said in a statement. "We grieve with you", the department posted on Facebook.
