Photos shared on social media by Stelter and others show police investigating the alleged threat near the Time Warner Center complex, where CNN's NY head office is housed.

The NYPD has confirmed that there is an ongoing investigation in the area and West 58th between 8th and 9th is closed.

Law enforcement said that someone had called and claimed there were 5 bombs inside the building.

During the bomb scare, CNN was forced to switch to pre-recorded material and host Don Lemon had to evacuate the studio in the middle of his show.

Police said a man with a southern accent called CNN about 10 p.m. Thursday and said five bombs had been placed throughout the facility inside the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle.

CNN said several fire alarm bells signalling an evacuation rang inside its newsroom shortly after 10:30 pm.
