The sheriff leading the investigation into the shooting death of a California police officer took aim at so-called sanctuary laws that limit cooperation with US immigration authorities.

A man suspected of killing a police officer this week in Newman, California, has been arrested, Deputy Blake Edwards with the Kern County Sheriff's Office said Friday. He crossed the border in Arizona several years ago and had worked a variety of jobs as a labourer, including at several dairies. Christianson didn't say when the 33-year-old came to the US but that the Mexico native has been living here for several years.

"We don't have the resources to make this happen and with a blink of an eye they came to our aid and were able to catch the suspect and bring him to our custody".

He said Arriaga had been arrested twice before on DUI charges, had known gang affiliations and was trying to flee to Mexico when officers apprehended him.

Arriaga, a criminal from Mexico, had crossed the USA border into Arizona illegally some time ago, Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said at a separate news conference on Friday.

Singh, 33, had been a Newman officer since 2011.

The shooting on Wednesday came amid an intense political fight over immigration, with President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats at odds over funding for a border wall that has forced a partial government shutdown.

He said he meant to bid $4.6 billion for 500 stores and other operating assets, including the Kenmore appliance brand. The closings comprise 43 Sears and 37 Kmart stores, the two brands operated by Sears Holdings .

The arrest of an accused cop killer signifies a return to public order, declares that such an egregious offense is not to be tolerated in a free and civil society, and allows citizens to breathe a sigh of relief.

Host Martha Raddatz took issue with Jeffries' dodging her question about Singh's death, but he maintained that his lack of familiarity with California statutes prevents him from responding to Christianson's assessment.

Singh is survived by his wife, Anamika, and their 5-month-old son.

During a news conference on Friday, Christianson spoke out strongly against California's sanctuary laws. Jerry Brown says the law permits sharing information on risky gang members with federal authorities. "He believed in this community", the chief said at a community vigil Friday night honoring the officer.

The suspect, Gustavo Perez Arriaga, fled after shooting Newman police Cpl. Singh's brother, Reggie, thanked officers through sobs.

The case, which opened just as the President and Congress clashed over illegal immigration and how best to control it, has highlighted the impact illegal immigration has on law enforcement, and the dangers of unfettered movement across the United States' southern border.

Richardson said while there has been negative publicity that may follow law enforcement in recent years, the killing of Singh should serve as a way to remind the community to support local law enforcement. He said both men were also in the country illegally.
