US flu season poised to be milder than last year's

Influenza A is the most common form of the virus circulating in Canada, and the majority of these viruses are H1N1.

Three preschoolers have died in Saskatchewan as a result of the flu so far this season, according to the provincial health ministry.

However, the number of people getting flu is down compared to this time of year.

"We're seeing between 120 to 150 cases per week over the last few weeks", said medical health officer Dr. Karin Goodison. People who are very sick or who are at high risk of serious flu complications and get flu symptoms should see a health care provider early in their illness for possible treatment with a flu antiviral drug.

Although the vaccine isn't 100 percent effective in preventing flu, people who are vaccinated and get the flu get a much milder case, Gupta noted.
