Captain Marvel box office: How much has the MCU film made?

The 21st installment of Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe - and its first film with a solo female lead - took in an estimated $455 million worldwide since Thursday.

"Captain Marvel" arrives almost a year after the cliffhanger ending to "Avengers: Infinity War", which teased that the heroine is the most powerful superhero and the only one who could take on villain Thanos. The North American tally surpasses those suggested by analysts by a fair margin, and the Chinese opening brought in an additional $89 million. So far Captain Marvel is pulling in more money internationally than any superhero movie introducing a new character touching down in nearly every major market worldwide, except for Japan.

Captain America's Chris Evans took notice of the film's already impressive numbers (how can you not?) and took to Twitter to congratulate his fellow Marvel star.

Captain Marvel hit screens on March 8. Perhaps the wisest course of action is to see the film and judge its merits for yourself.

The film has also performed well internationally with a $302 million opening on the global box office, making it the largest release in March around the world, and third-highest for the Marvel Comics Universe following "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Captain America: Civil War".

On Friday Disney owned-Marvel Studios released their first female-fronted superhero movie, Captain Marvel.
