According to NBC News, the alleged scheme involved parents bribing coaches and administrators in order to secure their children's entrance into elite universities. Court documents allege the couple paid bribes totaling $500,000 to have their two daughters designated as recruits to the University of Southern California crew team, despite not actually participating in the sport. Loughlin had been in Vancouver but returned to California Wednesday morning, where she was taken into custody.

The U.S. Attorney's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation alleged in the indictment that the alleged scheme helped students gain acceptance to top schools by helping them cheat on college exams.

Authorities say parents paid bribes to coaches to get their children athletic spots on teams regardless of their athletic ability or experience.

Federal authorities charged almost 50 people based on information gained from three cooperating witnesses.

All three are charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, a felony which carries a maximum sentence of five years behind bars.

The result saw Muguruza set up a fourth-round meeting with Kiki Bertens, the seventh seed who overcame Konta 7-6 (12-10) 6-4. "I will focus on getting better and start preparing for Miami", she said, referencing next week's Miami Open.

It added: "Huffman later made arrangements to pursue the scheme a second time, for her younger daughter, before deciding not to do so".

Of the other defendants, several are sports coaches or administrators at the University of Southern California, UCLA and Yale and Wake Forest universities. The scam is said to have involved faking Olivia's sporting records to make it seem like she was part of a school rowing crew. Prosecutors alleged she met with a confidential witness who explained that he could control an SAT testing center and could arrange for someone to proctor her daughter's test and correct it.

Dvorsiky and Williams, in exchange for receiving the payments, allowed Mark Riddell, a Florida man hired by Singer, to secretly take the tests or to replace the children's answers with his own, according to the indictment. Huffman's husband, actor William H. Macy, was not. Representatives for Loughlin and Huffman did not immediately return requests for comment. Hercules Capital Inc (NYSE: HTGC) shares dropped 7.1 percent Tuesday as CEO Manuel Henriquez also appears to be among those charged.

Authorities say parents would pay him a predetermined amount, with full knowledge of what they were doing.
