Stored inside the rooster is one relic of St Denis, one of St Genevieve and one of the thorns from the crown that Jesus Christ wore at the Crucifixion. Other religious statues were removed last week from the cathedral roof as part of the restoration of the church's spire. The cathedral's famous 18th-century organ that boasts more than 8,000 pipes also survived.

"Any fire in an historic building has the potential to be devastating", said Becky Clark, the Church of England's director of cathedrals and church buildings.
