After eliminating childhood idol and five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams en route to reaching the fourth round, Gauff was defeated Monday morning by former No. 1-ranked player and seventh-seeded Simona Halep.

Number eight seed Elina Svitolina plays number 24 Petra Martic in the first match of the day on Court Three, while China's Shuai Zhang faces Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska.

Gauff kept trying but she hit some shots that had the crowd gasping her match statistics of 15 winners to 28 unforced errors told its own story.

Halep lost to another American teen, 17-year-old Amanda Anisimova, to end her French Open defense in June so wasn't keen on suffering the same fate.

"I am really happy I can play in the quarter-finals again, it's one of my favourite tournaments", Halep said.

"I'm overjoyed. That's why I said, 'She's already a victor.' Already a victor, you hear me?"

"I lost second round of qualifying in Paris (at the French Open)".

It was a chastening experience for 23-year-old Berrettini, seeded 17th, but at least it was one that was over in brutally fast fashion.

Similarly, wage growth year-over-year also missed the mark - climbing by 3.1 percent instead of the 3.2 percent projected. According to CNBC , wages were up 3.1% over the past 12 months, while the average workweek was unchanged at 34.4 hours.

"It's a fantastic story really, to have those three guys just basically dominating nearly in the same era, in the same era", she said.

"I don't know my schedule right now because I wasn't expecting to be here, but my next goal would be to win the next tournament I play".

A hold of serve levelled the second set at 2-2 but unlike in her three previous matches, Coco failed to turn the tide in her favour. She came back from her first set and first service game loss to Halep by breaking her serve.

Gauff did manage to save two more match points when serving at 5-2, but Halep won the next game to reach the quarterfinals.

Gauff has said some of her teachers didn't know she played tennis until WimbledonWhere does she go from here? "I have more matches this week than literally the past five months". It was then she showed how much fight she has with a rollercoaster victory over Polona Hercog 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, in her first appearance at Center Court.

"Well, I'm going to do it online", she said.

Muchova won the last three games of the match and converted her third match point with a return that clipped the net cord.

Atlanta-born Gauff, who nickname is Coco, certainly doesn't appear short of confidence, stating repeatedly in the opening week of Wimbledon that she is in the competition to win it. Balancing different commitments within the same tournament can take a lot out of players but Williams suggested playing regularly was a positive for her. Instead of hanging out at a mall or going to see a movie with friends or working as a camp counselor Monday, there she was at Wimbledon at 1 p.m., standing in the tunnel that leads to the court with her father, Corey.
